With the relocation and renaming of MML, the Sea Dogs not only got a new name but brand new digs. The Harbour Front Arena cut the ribbon on September 1, 2018 with its first puck drop coming a few months later. The Harbour Front encompasses over 475, 000 square feet, configured to seat 21, 064 with 2, 195 of those being on the club level – which boasts not only a great view of the action but also a view of the New Bedford harbour.
The arena is located just off the I-195 in downtown historic New Bedford, right along the waterfront. For those who choose to drive, there are stadium-specific parking, however, most fans may choose to take advantage of the conveniently located parking north of the I-195 where shuttle service will take you right to the gate and runs until midnight for those wishing to take advantage of the great pubs and restaurants in the area (game-day tickets are required to ride the shuttle, but it is otherwise free).
The arena is built well above sea level and many fans choose to arrive early to take advantage of the two spectacular restaurants adjoining the arena boasting 180 degree waterfront views. These can be accessed from both inside or outside the arena and are open year round. Because of its location, the architecture (designed by notable Canadian Michael J Hayman) takes full advantage with floor to ceiling glass paneling and exterior walkways, with much of the vendors along the inside passages. This offers fans a spectacle both on and off the ice!
The Harbour Front is built around hockey. This is no surprise given the country the team’s GM is originally from. The seats are arranged at the perfect angle to see the ice. Lines of sight from all seats are excellent, and four Jumbotrons and assorted other visual media help fans to follow the action from around the NHFL where ever they are.
Although standard stadium fare is prevalent, the food options inside reflect the fact that at Harbour Front’s doorstep is one of the world’s richest fishing harbours, and fans can enjoy fried clams or lobster rolls. In addition, the arena boasts two full dining restaurants which are open 4pm Tues-Sat and 2pm on all game days. The Black Whale, accessed from the club sections if you are in the arena, is a fine dining option with a fantastic raw bar and many other seafood options. The Whaling Tavern, located on the 200 level if you are in the arena, is a classic tavern with great seafood pub fare you would expect from a city on the water. While you can’t watch the game while you dine in these establishments, they are open before and after the game and are publicly accessible from the outside once the arena closes.
After the game, it is an easy walk to any of the numerous restaurants and pubs located in downtown New Bedford. Although, not a raucous little city – they do enjoy a win and hate to lose.
